The End of Times

While very little is known today about the Doomtimes, the scholars do know that it was a war with non-human forces. Due to Rath being a political capital of some type it was targeted various times during this conflict and bears the scars from nuclear strike and some say its temperature was permanently changed by the kinetic bombardment of a large asteroid. The Doomtimes were believed to have lasted one or two generations, but some argue it was 800 or more years. Much of the population was killed and the giant spaceports in orbit were destroyed or came crashing down to Rath. Debris from the spaceport above the City is still visited by Ranger squads. Much of the population was already dead when the final blow came.

The final blow was the toxic bombardment of a chlorine based heavy gas. It poisoned the world and forced people to seek high places where the clouds didn’t roll. Auropia started then as people took refuge on its now inert giant space elevators. Auropia was uniquely located at a high elevation combined with elevators being stuck at a half mile above the ground or higher meaning the heavy gas stayed well below its safe metal towers. As people arrived the City grew and all refuges were excepted for generations, but eventually resources became scarce and the City and most other safe areas started to fight for resources and non-poison land. This lead to a second round of fighting that many scholars include in the Doomtimes. Nukes were used and war decimated areas. Some populations were killed with biological or chemical weapons to preserve the land. Eventually the fighting became too costly and people became inwardly focused, just trying to survive. It has been nearly 200,000 years since Doomtimes, but its scars are still everywhere. Toxic gas still makes lowlands uninhabitable, the temperature outside of much of the planet never gets much higher than freezing, and nuclear wastelands are poisoned with high radiation still after all the years.
